Description

Coal was found on Preston Island. It was owned by Sir Robert Preston who in around 1800 sunk a coal pit and built a saltworks. The coal extraction failed but the saltworks carried on until c.1840. The old works are still well preserved. There is a 4 and a half mile walking circuit around the island that starts from the historic town of Culross on the Firth of Forth. No camping or overnight parking.
